The feature

What is it?

Quiz night just broke out of the fellowship hall. Live matches are real-time team quizzing: your host spins up a room, picks a ruleset and translation, and drops a 6-character join code. In the current beta you can join as a guest with just the code and a display name. No account needed. Guests have to be 13 or older and use a nickname that doesn't identify you; kids under 13 can't use guest access. Local mode keeps everyone in one room. Online mode? Your team can be anywhere.

The buzzer is built so slow Wi-Fi doesn't steal your moment. Every buzz can carry a local timestamp and a clock-offset estimate, and the server logs its own receive time plus whether it had to fall back on it. A grace window (200 to 250 milliseconds in the built-in presets) soaks up ordinary jitter, and the ranking code is unit-tested. Real talk, though: networks and device clocks aren't perfect, so when timing truly matters, organizers still need a replay or an external official record.

Your host runs the room like a quizmaster runs a round: push the question, watch the buzzes stack up in order, hear the answer, make the call. Correct? The ruleset's points hit the board. Foul? The penalty stings. Either way, the scoreboard moves live all the way to the final screen. Three built-in presets and fully custom rulesets cover points, penalties, timers, question types, team size, rounds, tie-breakers, and lockout. One thing to know: beta matches are made for practice. They're not certified as the sole officiating record for high-stakes competition.

  • Host a room, share the 6-character code. Beta guests 13+ join with a non-identifying nickname; under-13 guest access isn't allowed
  • Local mode for one room, Online mode for anywhere: one buzzer for practice night and inter-church showdowns
  • Latency-aware buzzing: your device's timing plus the server's receive time, with a grace window and a fallback flag
  • Two lockout styles: first buzz wins, or everyone inside the grace window gets revealed together
  • Host verdicts score instantly: correct earns the ruleset's points, fouls cost the penalty, and the whole room sees it live
  • Three ready-made presets plus fully custom rulesets: points, timers, question types, team size, rounds, tie-breakers

Step by step

How you'll use it

If you're a quizzer

Practice got snowed out. Your match room doesn't care.

  1. Join with the code

Open Match, punch in the 6-character code your coach sent, and pick a nickname that doesn't give away who you are. Guest access is for quizzers 13 and up; younger quizzers need the approved guardian-cleared account path.

  2. Lock in through the read

The question rolls out during the read phase (8 seconds in the standard preset). Track every word before you commit.

  3. Buzz like you mean it

Your device can send an input timestamp and clock-offset estimate while the server logs its receive time and applies the ruleset's grace window. If your connection is rough, the host may still need to make a ruling or run a replay.

  4. Answer and take the verdict

Answer inside the timer, then watch the host make the call. On Verse Memorization Standard, correct is worth 20 points; a foul costs 10.

  5. Race to the final board

Every verdict moves the score live, all the way to the final board. Then talk (kind) trash in the van group chat.

If you're a coach

Two churches, ninety miles apart, one scrimmage on the calendar.

  1. Create the match

Choose a ruleset (a preset like Mixed Format or your own custom build), set the translation, pick Online mode, and text both teams the join code.

  2. Run it like a quizmaster

Start from the lobby, push each question, and watch the buzz order come in ranked and fair. Rule each answer correct or a foul. The points take care of themselves.

  3. Let the scoreboard coach

Live team scores show momentum swings the moment they happen, so you know exactly when your side needs a huddle.

  4. Debrief from the results

Turn the final scoreboard into this week's practice targets, and pull any match back up later from your recent-matches list.

If you're a church leader

Quizzing should feel like the event of the week. Here's how to make it one.

  1. Host church-wide quiz nights

Run Local mode in the fellowship hall: questions up front, every quizzer buzzing from their own phone, one live scoreboard for the whole room.

  2. Connect sister churches

Switch to Online mode and scrimmage congregations in other cities: no van rental required, just a join code in the group chat.

  3. Keep rules consistent

Save your program's ruleset once (points, timers, team size, tie-breakers) and every match night runs on the same rules. No debates at the door.

Quick questions

Good to know

How does the buzzer stay fair over the internet?

The server can rank a buzz using your device's input timestamp and clock-offset estimate, records its own receive time as a fallback, and applies the ruleset's grace window. That soaks up ordinary jitter, but it can't erase every network or device-clock difference, so high-stakes events still need an organizer-approved official record and a replay procedure.

Do quizzers need an account to join a live match?

Not in the current beta: guests can join with the 6-character code and a display name, though hosting still requires an account. Guests must be 13 or older, use a non-identifying nickname, and follow the host's rules. Children under 13 can't use the guest path, because it doesn't verify account age or guardian clearance.

Who decides if an answer is correct in a live match?

The host, just like a quizmaster in a real quiz room. They hear the answer and make the call. A correct ruling scores the ruleset's points, a foul applies the penalty, and everyone's scoreboard updates instantly.

Can we use our own program's rules in a match?

Yes. Three presets come ready to play (Verse Memorization Standard, Reading and Comprehension, and Mixed Format), and custom rulesets let you set points per correct answer, foul penalties, bonus value and eligibility, read and answer timers, enabled question types, team size, rounds per match, tie-breakers, and lockout behavior.
